Those of you who have read my book: ‘The Astrological Karma of the USA,’ and some of my other previous newsletters, may remember my comments on the Astrological dynamic in the U.S. Astrological birthchart which gives us a high propensity for delusionary engagement and glorification of violence and conflict. This is something which can be perpetrated against both other nations and within our own borders.
Knowing of this dynamic when I was writing the first edition of my book in the winter of 2001/2002, and seeing the approach of transiting Pluto into a challenging engagement with this dynamic in the U.S. chart led to my prediction of what became the War in Iraq.
In the aftermath of the horrible violence this weekend in El Paso and Dayton, Ohio, I have decided to revisit this aspect of our karmic lessons and share what the current and impending challenges to this part of the U.S. karmic lessons are.
First of all, the whole world is contending with a Jupiter/Neptune Square this year, creating a penchant for delusionary fanaticism. There is obviously a plague of such tendencies on many global stages right now.
Here is what I wrote about this Jupiter/Neptune Square in my article: 2019/2020-An Astrological (And Otherwise) View:
There are two major Astrological themes at play next year and they are very different from each other.
One is the fact that Jupiter is now in Sagittarius, the sign it rules. Which, on its own, provides tremendous confidence, enthusiasm, honesty and inspiration to push forward in an expansive way towards your political, philosophical, spiritual, and/or religious goals.
Neptune has for some years, and for some years more, been in the sign it rules, Pisces. In positive manifestation this is a wonderful opportunity to open to great emotional/spiritual healing, compassion and mystical/unconditional love and imaginative sensitivities.
In 2019, however, these two planets will square each other three times, in January, June and September.
This will likely challenge the Jupiter to not respond with the negative potentials of Jupiter in Sagittarius, that being exaggerated, over-the top, over-confident enthusiasm towards your goals, and the kind of honesty that burns rather than heals.
The challenge for Jupiter to not react in this way will likely come from the negative side of Neptune in Pisces, that being: confusion, illusion, delusions, victimhood, escapism and martyrdom.
Neptune in Pisces has been squaring the Sagittarian self-image of the U.S. for a few years now. In 2016 Saturn in Sagittarius was squaring this Neptune as well, as Saturn was sitting on our rather self-righteous Sagittarian Ascendant Self-Image. I wrote about this earlier, stating that this aspect, and its penchant for the victim/victimizer program, gave us President Donald Trump. But it was also Brexit in the U.K. and other political developments around the world at that time.
This year, however, it is not the Saturn heaviness on our self-image, which Donald Trump used to encourage a large portion of the populace to really identify with their restricted victimhood, at play. A heaviness which, at that time, could also relate to the Democratic Party voters sense of restriction/victimhood at having to vote for a rather uninspiring candidate like Hillary Clinton.
This year it is this expansive, ‘pumped-up,’ exuberant, but potentially fanatical Jupiterian influence on our rather self-righteous Sagittarian Ascendant/Self-Image, which will be engaged by a need for Neptune/Pisces compassion and sensitivity to those who suffer. But will be tempted to do so blinded by emotional delusions.
This Jupiter/Neptune influence globally will inspire everyone to be quite forthright with their felt, or perceived, pain. The noted connection to the U.S. chart just makes it likely to play out in a particularly dramatic fashion here.
The problem will be, which victims you want to focus on? The children and families fleeing from violence, abuse and poverty in their Central American nations? Or those victims here in the U.S. of El Salvadoran MS-13 gang violence, creating the sense that those individuals at our borders represent an ‘invasion.’
That is just one example, for this Jupiter/Neptune Square which will be operative around the world next year. (End Quote)
The fanatical part of this tension (Jupiter in Sagittarius) crossed over the U.S. Self-Image (The Ascendant) on January 3rd of this year and will be continuing to travel through our first house of self-image into next year.
The self-image of the U.S. is dominated by our Sagittarian Ascendant, of which Hilarion says:
This sign rising will tend to make the individual see himself as upright, honest and morally strong, whether true or not. (End Quote)
This self-righteous, potentially fanatical, energy is being especially ‘pumped-up’ by transiting Jupiter in Sagittarius at this time.
The Neptune tension on that Jupiter over-honest/fanaticism is coming from our 3rd House, the house of mental thinking and communications.
This can easily bring to mind communications we hear almost daily from our ‘Twitter-in-Chief’ President.
During my numerous hours of listening to NPR news and interview programs while I perform household chores, however, one can also clearly notice a large amount of discussion and communications regarding the vulnerability, confusion, escapism, and potential for violence we have unleashed through the Internet and Social Media platforms.
Both Sagittarius and Jupiter want to feel expansively inspired and passionate about something. That passion, however, can be fired up by beneficence, generosity and love, or it can be fired up by hatred and moral condemnation. Unfortunately, hatred and moral condemnation is a lot easier to generate. In these times we are being sorely challenged in our ability to keep to the higher ground.
This is not what worries me the most, however. What worries me to a greater extent is the tense engagement of this transiting Jupiter/Neptune Square upon the ‘natal’ Square between Mars and Neptune in the U.S. birthchart. Jupiter is now actively opposing the natal Mars and squaring the Natal Neptune. And this will continue throughout this year.
Transiting, much slower moving, Neptune is also within ‘orb’ of opposing and squaring this natal Mars/Neptune Square. The Neptune tensions on this Square, however, don’t start to peak until next year.
To get a quick sense of what this square entails here is what Hilarion* says about Mars being in our 7th House, the house of partnerships and relationships. In a Reading for a nation like this we can apply this to relationships with other nations as well as relationships within the nation.
Mars in the 7th House:
Seventh House The placement of Mars in the seventh house of a birth chart brings the disruptive energies of this planet into the life department dealing with partnerships — particularly the pair-bond partnership with a mate. Mars in the seventh sector tends to promote the selection of a mate who will allow the aggressive and disruptive tendencies of the native to be brought to the surface, where he can clearly see them for what they are, and can experience their results in terms of conflict with the mate. Generally speaking, most of his love-relationships will be marked by conflict energies. .
The lesson is of course to dismantle the tendency to rush into battle when opposed, and to rise above differences on the wings of true affection. Remember that true love forgives all, and that one of the primary purposes for earth life is to learn at last that true form of compassionate affection. Karmically, the native must pass through repeated episodes in which his love-relationships founder on the shoals of conflict that he himself has created. The pain of separation is a way to discharge burdens accumulated in earlier lives when others suffered similar distress at his hands.
And this is regarding Neptune afflicting Mars:
What is usually observed in individuals with this placement is a tendency to misuse the strength, energy or power with which they are endowed. (End Quote)
So, this Mars/Neptune Square challenges the U.S. with a tendency to ‘misuse the strength, energy or power’ with which we are endowed. A scary proposition for a nation with a population of 327 million people possessing an estimated 270-300 million guns.
The Neptune end of this tension in our natal chart is coming from our 9th House, the house of philosophy and religion. Hence, moral, philosophical, religious delusions can release the grip on that Mars propensity to misuse power. This makes me think of the concept of ‘Manifest Destiny’ which we all read and accepted in our history books but was basically a belief system which excused the genocide conducted against Native Americans.
Or so-called Christians who bomb abortion clinics or murder a doctor while he is serving as an usher in a church.
Humans can do the cruelest things when they think that God is on their side.
In my book I wrote about how, in the 1960’s, transiting Pluto was conjuncting the U.S. natal Neptune in the 9th House. This led to the spiritual/belief system revolution fueled by psychedelics, and that great 60’s music.
That same Pluto, however, was, at the same time, squaring Mars in our house of relationships. That manifested as the War in Vietnam.
The first time Pluto moved, once again, into hard aspect to that Neptune/Mars Square was from 2003-2006. Knowing that was coming was what I was able to use to predict the likelihood of a similar Vietnam-like delusionary military endeavor, aka the War in Iraq.
With this Jupiter tension on the Mars/Neptune Square occurring this year the penchant for deluded violence is clearly escalating here in the U.S. We have had more mass shootings so far this year than there have been days in the year.
This propensity for aggressive belligerence is also evident in the current U.S. relationships with other nations, notably with Iran and China.
The time period ahead that feels much more potentially vulnerable, confused and full of possible victimhood is when Neptune will start to make exact squares and oppositions to the natal Mars and Neptune. As I said, these transits are already within orb of influence now, but will make their first exact ‘hit’ on June 23 of 2020, with succeeding hits throughout 2021 and 2022.
I certainly hope that doesn’t mean another war, but it could.
Something familiar for those who have been following my writings for some time is my discussion of the ‘victim/victimizer’ program. Any difficult Neptune aspect is going to create a high propensity for this program.
Essentially, this is where you feel that if you don’t want to be a victim, you have to be a victimizer. And if you don’t want to be a victimizer, then you have to be a victim. And there appears to be no way out of these two options.
To my mind, there is only one way out of this program and that is from the positive side of the planet Neptune, that being unconditional love and forgiveness, for oneself and for others. And spiritual faith, trust and surrender, to where there are no victims or victimizers, but just all of us frightened little boys and girls doing the best that we can.
I will end this newsletter with a story from my book which I felt illustrated how this Mars/Neptune tension in the U.S. chart could have been largely healed and integrated at the end of the Cold War:
At the end of the Cold War in 1990, the combative, Martial, militaristic end of our national consciousness had a chance to integrate with a Neptunian, compassionate, healing energy. I am referring to a specific incident related to me by a friend who was a Colonel in the U.S. Army working at the Pentagon. When the Cold War ended he submitted a well thought-out proposal to his superiors to transform the military into a force for peace. He envisioned a re-organization of the Armed Forces, which would maintain military readiness and training, while also making all of that manpower available to provide food, medicine and other humanitarian aid to other nations suffering from poverty, war, natural and environmental disasters. His proposal was rejected and resulted in such an uncomfortable environment for him that he was forced into early retirement. That proposal was a chance to have Martial strength and power integrated with Neptunian caring and compassion. Unfortunately the Martian element of the military saw that proposal as too threatening. If Mars and Neptune had integrated to allow our incredible well-funded machinery of war to be used as a beneficent, powerful force for peace, well, who knows where we would have been on September 11, 2001? (End Quote)
I pray that we have yet another chance to manifest my friend’s vision.
I do believe that it is the tensions in our Astrological birthcharts that force us to go to our Higher Selves. For only from that transpersonal level of consciousness can we heal and integrate these tensions.
I have faith that humanity will still, eventually, find its way to Love.
