Final Saturn/Uranus Opposition

I have been speaking about the five Saturn/Uranus oppositions spanning a two-year period beginning on November 4, 2008 since I was aware of their approach in 2007.

On July 26th they had their final opposition of this series. As usual this kind of profound archetypal Astrological tension tends to push fear and concern buttons in me and I, and everyone else Astrologically aware, were waiting in anticipation for what might occur.

Saturn is related to the metal lead, about as solid and stable as you can get. Uranus is related to uranium, constantly changing and potentially explosive.

I have previously noted how the first of these Saturn/Uranus oppositions occurring on November 4, 2008, the day of the American Presidential election, was one way in which the whole world witnessed a Uranian surprise change of the Saturnian status quo.

Uranus rules electricity and new technologies and, indeed, without the Uranian technology of the internet Obama would never be president, due to his fund raising capacity and campaign networking, both greatly facilitated through the web.

But, as the final Saturn/Uranus opposition approached on July 26th of this year we saw how an angry conservative Internet blogger could post an out-of-context video on the Internet and force governmental authorities to suddenly (Uranus) eject a woman out of her job and economic security (Saturn). His Uranian effort to upset Saturn is going to have Saturnian authoritative control and insistence on Saturnian responsible accountability coming back at him, as he is about to be sued for defamation of character.

And, on July 25th, the day before the exact opposition, there was the WikiLeaks Afghan Diary release of 91,000 classified documents showing, once and for all, that the Uranian technological power and potential can really undermine the control and structure of Saturnian governments. This has sparked the most intense debate so far of what I have previously used to paraphrase the essence of Saturn/Uranus tension, that being Freedom (Uranus) vs. Responsibility (Saturn).

The fact that this tension has been there and building, simply peaking on July 26 is evident by the following comments posted in Harper’s on-line magazine on August 3rd:

But the major target surely is WikiLeaks itself, and on this score the goal of the national-security state is unambiguous. WikiLeaks must be destroyed. Indeed, as I noted in March, long before these leaks, the Army Counterintelligence Center had prepared a 32-page secret plan to destroy WikiLeaks. The memo notes that the American intelligence community has valuable allies in the struggle against WikiLeaks—China, North Korea, Russia, Vietnam, and Zimbabwe. It recommended emulating the tactics used by these tyrannical states:

The identification, exposure, termination of employment, criminal prosecution, legal action against current or former insiders, leakers, or whistleblowers could potentially damage or destroy this center of gravity and deter others considering similar actions from using the Wikileaks.org Web site.

The closing argument in this article is as follows:

Few functions are so fundamental to a democracy as the decision about when and how to wage a war. That decision means an investment of treasure and blood that can affect the lives of hundreds of millions in America and elsewhere. In this process, fair presentation and discussion of the facts is essential to a correct result. If information can be routinely suppressed because it is embarrassing to political leaders or would undermine the arguments they make to the nation, then our democracy is faltering. In the wake of these disclosures, Americans should carefully judge the conduct of those who claim that suppressing the leaks is in the interests of national security. Are they upholding national security, or are they betraying American democracy?

As I said, Responsibility vs. Freedom.

Of course in the background to this is the fact that both Saturn and Uranus are squaring, in tension with, Pluto in Capricorn, relatable to the death/rebirth of governmental and economic systems between 2008 and 2025.

One other symbolic event which took place on the day of July 26th was that was the day that Tony Hayward was finally removed from his post as CEO of British Petroleum.

Of course the Saturn/Uranus tension was operative at the time of the spill and what happened to Hayward is simply symbolic of the Uranian potential to upset the Saturnian status quo which is relevant to the overall effect of the BP oil spill as I noted in my earlier newsletter.

The one place which has been really hit hard by this opposition has been Pakistan. First of all, the WikiLeaks documents have now concretized assertions that the Pakistani Intelligence Service has been supporting the Afghan Taliban in various ways. This resulted in accusatory statements by Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron while visiting Pakistan’s archenemy, India. Then on July 28th Pakistan had its worst Airplane crash in history with 152 dead. Then there was the worst monsoon floods in 80 years affecting 3 million people. And then the recent flare up of violence in Karachi. I imagine if you were Pakistani you might be feeling a bit like Job in the Bible right now.

Some of you may remember that in my newsletter back in June: Volcanoes, Poland, Israel, & Aries Activity I predicted that Jupiter/Uranus in Aries and this last Saturn/Uranus opposition could affect Pakistan pretty severely where I stated:

The place which seems to be particularly in line to be triggered by this Uranus/Jupiter Aries 1st degree conjunction is Pakistan. They have their Mars, which rules Aries, in the 1st degree of Cancer. So this Uranus/Jupiter conjunction in Aries will be exactly squaring their Mars. Mars in Cancer is an early childhood that involves conflict and aggression. The Mars is also in their 10th House of work, career, and role in the world. This makes it such that you can put a lot of energy into whatever role you want to play in the world, but there can be a tendency to rub people the wrong way with aggressive tendencies.

I would expect some kind of willful flare-ups in Pakistan around this. This may coincide with the upcoming military operation in Kandahar in Afghanistan this summer In July Saturn will oppose this Uranus/Jupiter conjunction from the 1st degree of Libra.

I do find that Astrology is really useful at showing you what your lessons are and what kind of influences are bearing upon you. But it can’t show you how you are doing. For that I use my Tarot Cards.

Where they are now:

The Hierophant
Here they are being initiated by, and into, the presence and consciousness of the Hierophant. The word hierophant means: ‘revealer of things sacred.’ Here you gain the ability to see into the true nature of the soul, beyond the actions/reactions of the personality, gaining thereby an unconditional love and a transpersonal consciousness.

This isn’t necessarily a mellow process. On this card if you look at the face of the Hierophant he can appear kind, beneficent and smiling. But he can also appear mysterious, like he is smiling at a secret joke. He can even appear sinister. The truth is, he loves you, but he knows what he has to put you through to get you where you need to go.

The Past:

Ace of Cups
Here they were experiencing an outrush of emotional feeling in its purest form. It is like the Holy Grail itself.

It’s difficult to say exactly but I think it was a period of positive euphoria with the ousting of Musharraf and the new President coming into power, the husband of the martyred former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

The Challenge:

The Chariot
Here you are experiencing the initiation that corresponds to the sign Cancer, a sign of great care and nurturing. This initiation, however, is into the awareness that the true fulfillment of your entire human reality. Of your body, of your personality, even of your higher self, is really but to serve as vehicles for the expression of the spirit.

I would say a pretty high challenge for Pakistan right now.

What can help:

Princess of Disks
Here you have been under a lot of pressure, for perhaps a very long time. But through that pressure a hidden diamond has slowly been forming, to where now you have become this princess. She is looking deeply into the center of the Earth, deeply into the center of herself. It is as if she is about to become aware of some secret wonder. She doesn’t know what it is, but she knows that something is coming. She can begin to honor the pressures, rather than to deny or resent them.

Possible Future, based on conditions in the present but can always be changed because we have free will:

Princess of Wands
Here you have adapted to this fiery personality who is very dynamic and daring and aspirational. However she is based on a certain fear or insecurity and therefore can also be very impatient of opposition, even within her own self.

I certainly hope and pray that Pakistan can change the Princess of Wands or move though that identification more quickly, and hopefully open to the energies of The Chariot instead.

The other nation I’ve been watching is North Korea, but I don’t think she will do anything too rash until next year. Although the U.S. and South Korean joint military maneuvers and the defiant claims of retaliatin even nuclear retaliation are a bit unnerving.

I would like to end this newsletter with some comments on the human, personal level of experiencing this final Saturn/Uranus tension.

This last and final opposition between Saturn and Uranus occurring in these past two years has moved from Saturn in Virgo and Uranus in Pisces to Saturn in Libra and Uranus in Aries. Those of us born with Saturn in Libra know it well. According to Hilarion it involves karmic lessons around partnership. Where marriage may be delayed, denied or made the object of limitation or restriction in some form. Uranus is sudden change and freedom from old patterns that have outlived their purpose. In Aries, Uranus can be impulsively willful. Another sense of this opposition can be seen in the key phrases for Libra and Aries. Libra: I seek myself through what I unite. Aries: I seek myself through myself. Rather different approaches, although one is not better than the other.

What I have noticed during this time that this opposition is taking place is that a lot of relationships are coming to a head right now. The results differ, but they tend to be either a Uranus in Aries dynamic leap away from a Saturn in Libra relationship, which is just too restrictive and limiting. Or a deeper more responsible Saturnian commitment and dedication, which is willing to control and withstand the Uranus in Aries self-oriented impulsive tendency toward freedom. A sacrifice for something which is more enduring, committed and loyal i.e. Saturnian.

Whether Saturn wins the day or Uranus depends on the nature and needs of the relationship. Of course a healthy integration of Saturn and Uranus is what is called for regardless.

And for those of us not in a committed relationship, especially over a significant length of time, there is some Uranian energy which can result in either wanting to leap into a relationship or engage in something which would make relationship more of a possibility, or to finally leap away in a seemingly ultimate freedom from the need, desire, or attachment to having a relationship. Or perhaps both, depending on which way the wind is blowing.
