Stressful Saturn/Uranus Times

Tomorrow, (September 15) Saturn and Uranus will make their third exact opposition within a two-year period. Those who have followed my newsletters know that I have been commenting on the dance between these two planets for some time.

Saturn represents responsibility, authority, the conventional, limitation and restriction. Uranus represents the unconventional, the revolutionary, sudden change out of the blue, and freedom from old patterns that have outlived their purpose. I paraphrase this Saturn/Uranus conflict as Responsibility vs. Freedom.

The last period of Saturn/Uranus opposition was 40 years ago during the 1960’s, when there was a lot of conventional vs. unconventional conflict going on. Interesting that there has been a lot of flashbacking recently to events 40 years ago. The Moon landing, Woodstock, the Charles Manson murders.

At that time there was Pluto tension involved in the mix as well, making it all especially intense.

In our current phase of Saturn/Uranus tension we experienced the first of these oppositions last year on November 4th, which was the day of the American Presidential election. One could say that the American election was how the whole world was experiencing that tension. Symbolically speaking, McCain would have been Saturn, the old and conventional, and Obama is Uranus, surprising, unconventional change.

The second opposition was on February 5th of this year, right when the Congress voted on the Economic Stimulus bill, when every single Democrat in the House voted for it, and every single Republican voted for it. And in the Senate, all but three Republicans voted against it. It was then clear that any hopes of a bi-partisan spirit during these tense polarizing times was not going to happen.

This third opposition has clearly been resonant with the building tension over the proposed healthcare reform. The Saturnian status quo is definitely digging in its heels to oppose the Uranian change, although there is more than a little Uranian ‘wacko’ nuttiness involved in the resistance.

One can see the arguments on the left and the right in relation to the Saturn/Uranus tension. The conservatives fear that Big Government (Saturn) and their ‘Death Panels’ (Saturn is sometimes called the Grim Reaper) will severely limit their freedom (Uranus.) Whereas the left feels that it is time to totally change and liberate us (Uranus) from the grip of the Healthcare Industry cartel and their control of our lives for the benefit of their own profit (Saturn).

In other reflections of this Saturn/Uranus tension we have recently seen sudden emotional outbursts in normally conventional settings, whether Representative Wilson calling Obama a liar during his speech to Congress, or Serena Williams at the US Open, or the events last night at the MTV awards.

Makes me wonder what will happen tomorrow.

This opposition is between the 25th degrees of Virgo and Pisces, so anyone born in the last week and a half of the signs Virgo, Pisces, Gemini, and Sagittarius is getting hit by hard aspect with this opposition.

The United States has its Mars in Gemini with its penchant for verbal abuse and combativeness at the 23rd degree, and it is square to Neptune making it subject to the victim/victimizer program at the 24th degree of Virgo. So the Saturn/Uranus polarizing tension has been triggering the American penchant for mental and verbal criticism involving Neptunian confusion, illusion, deception, victimhood and martyrdom, and what I commonly call the victim/victimizer program.

I think we can all recognize various ways in which this energy has been manifesting. Probably not the best time in which to push through controversial new legislation.

I often notice that different films seem to reflect the flavor of the current Astrological weather. For example, when Neptune the planet associated with the God or Goddess of the Sea, was in Opposition to Saturn, the planet of the concrete and responsible and authoritative, was when the film Titanic hit the collective psyche, where the Saturnian authoritative, controlling hubris of the worlds fastest ship hit some Saturnian/Neptunian manifestation (iceberg) and had to surrender to the Neptunian sea. Of course there was plenty of self-sacrificing Neptunian romantic love going on in that movie as well.

The last two movies I saw recently were both second choices because I couldn’t see the movie I was planning to see. But they both reflect the unusual, even bizarre (Uranus) upsetting the concrete, predictable (Saturnian) reality. The movies were Moon, and District 9, which I ‘accidentally’ saw on 9/09/09. Hmm..

I don’t want to spoil the movies, but the surprise evil of greedy corporate mentality, in turn having to deal with its own threatening surprises, does seem to be at play in additional venues than Washington DC these days.

Pluto did go direct a few days ago, so some transformation of the Capricornian (Pluto is moving through Capricorn) governmental/corporate structure might still take place.

I’m still more than a little apprehensive to see what happens in November when the Pluto/Saturn tension (for the first time since 9/11) hits the charts of the United States, Barack Obama, and Joseph Biden, at more or less the same time. Let us remember to do all that we can to foster peace and compassion in our world this November.

Myself, I am waiting to board a flight for my first trip to Ireland. I will be giving a lecture on The Astrological Karma of Ireland and have been asked to share some details from that, so that will be my next newsletter, although it will be combined with a look at the Astrological Karma of Edward Kennedy. It seems that there is something archetypically resonant between the deep emotional commitments of the Kennedys and their tragedies, (the Kennedys happening to be of Irish descent), and the emotional commitments and tragedies of Irish History and character.

So, my next missive will be coming from the Emerald Isle.
